Do You Need a VPS for a Futures Trade Copier? Cloud vs. Desktop Setup Explained

Most desktop trade copiers require a VPS to run continuously. Cloud-based copiers don't. Here's how each approach works, who each is right for, and what prop firm traders actually need.

Do You Need a VPS for a Futures Trade Copier? Cloud vs. Desktop Setup Explained

If you've started researching trade copiers for your futures prop firm accounts, you've almost certainly seen VPS mentioned. Some setups recommend a Chicago-based Windows VPS for "low latency." Others claim you need one to keep the copier running 24/7. And some cloud-based tools say you don't need a VPS at all.

All of this is roughly correct — for different types of setups. Whether you need a VPS comes down to which kind of trade copier you're running, and what you're actually trying to accomplish.

This guide explains how desktop copiers and cloud copiers work differently, what the real trade-offs are, and what most prop firm futures traders actually need.

How Desktop/VPS-Based Trade Copiers Work

The most common desktop trade copier setup works like this: you install a plugin or standalone application on a Windows machine, connect it to your broker(s), and let it run continuously. While the application is running, it monitors your master account for fills and pushes copies to your slave accounts.

The immediate problem: this requires the machine to be on at all times. If your home computer sleeps, crashes, or restarts for a Windows update mid-session, the copier stops. That's why most desktop copier setups recommend pairing with a VPS — a virtual private server running 24/7 in a data center, ideally in the Chicago area (close to CME Group's matching engines).

What you're maintaining with a VPS setup:

  • The VPS itself (OS updates, uptime monitoring, restarts)
  • Your desktop copier application (version updates, config changes)
  • Broker platform installations on the VPS
  • Remote connection access when something breaks

For a trader managing 2–3 accounts on a single broker, this is manageable. For a trader managing 5–15 accounts across Tradovate, Rithmic, and ProjectX, it can quickly become a significant operational overhead on top of trading itself.

How Cloud-Based Trade Copiers Work

Cloud-based copiers move the entire execution engine off your local machine and into managed infrastructure. You connect your broker accounts via the web (or a mobile app), configure your copy rules, and the copier handles everything server-side.

You don't install anything locally (beyond potentially a mobile app for monitoring). The copier keeps running when your computer is off, when you're traveling, or when your internet goes down — because the execution engine isn't on your machine.

What "cloud-based" actually means for you:

  • No VPS to provision, maintain, or pay for separately
  • Adding a new account is done through a browser or app, not a config file
  • Monitoring and adjustments are available from any device

The trade-off is that you're trusting the provider's infrastructure uptime instead of controlling your own — which is worth weighing when you pick a provider.

When a VPS Actually Makes Sense

A VPS-based desktop copier makes sense if:

You're scalping with very tight entries. Local execution on a machine close to the CME data center genuinely reduces latency compared to a cloud server routing through extra hops. For strategies where filling at the exact tick matters, the latency difference is real. (For most swing and intraday trend traders, it doesn't change outcomes.)

You already have a VPS in your workflow. If you're running NinjaTrader or another platform on a VPS anyway, adding a desktop copier to the same machine is often the path of least resistance.

You prefer full infrastructure control. Some traders simply want to own their setup end-to-end. That's a legitimate preference.

When You Probably Don't Need One

For most prop firm traders running multiple funded accounts, a VPS is solving a problem that a cloud copier already handles:

  • Your main concern is uptime across sessions. Cloud copiers handle this by design — the execution engine is always running.
  • You're copying across multiple brokers. Cross-broker copying (Tradovate → Rithmic, or Rithmic → ProjectX) is handled natively by cloud platforms designed for it. Desktop plugins are often single-broker.
  • You're adding accounts regularly. If your account count is growing (passing more evaluations, adding firms), a cloud setup scales without reinstalling software.
  • You want to monitor from a phone. A cloud copier with a mobile app lets you check account status, adjust rules, or flatten positions from anywhere — without connecting to a remote desktop.

How SyncFutures Works as a Cloud Copier

SyncFutures is a cloud-based futures trade copier built specifically for prop firm traders running multiple accounts. No VPS required — the copier runs on our infrastructure, and you manage everything through the web platform or the native iOS and Android app.

Supported brokers:

  • Tradovate (OAuth2 — no username/password entry)
  • Rithmic (credentials + your prop firm's system name)
  • NinjaTrader (runs on Tradovate's infrastructure — same OAuth2 flow)
  • ProjectX (username + API key — currently TopstepX only)

Cross-broker copying is supported: a Tradovate master account can copy fills to a Rithmic slave, or vice versa. This matters for prop firm traders who have accounts at multiple firms running on different brokers.

What you configure per copy rule:

  • Master and slave accounts
  • Quantity multiplier (0.1x to 100x — scale up or down per account)
  • Symbol filter (which contracts to copy)

Beyond copy rules, realized P&L is tracked across all your connected accounts in one dashboard view.

Plans are connection-based — all features are available on every plan:

PlanConnectionsPrice
Starter3$39/mo
Professional5$89/mo
UltimateUnlimited (up to 200 accounts)$129/mo

All plans include a 7-day free trial. See full pricing details.

Getting Started

If you're running funded accounts on Tradovate, Rithmic, NinjaTrader, or ProjectX (TopstepX) and you want to stop managing them by hand:

  1. Start your 7-day free trial at syncfutures.com/pricing
  2. Connect your broker accounts from the Accounts page (web or mobile)
  3. Set up your copy rules with the master account and slave accounts you want to sync
  4. Trade on your master — SyncFutures handles the rest

You can set up a Tradovate connection in a few minutes via OAuth2 (no credentials to enter). Rithmic connections require your username, password, and prop firm system name. ProjectX connects with your API key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SyncFutures require a VPS?
No. SyncFutures runs on cloud infrastructure — you don't need to provision or maintain a VPS. The copier continues running even when your computer is off.

What happens if my internet goes down?
The copy engine runs on our servers, not your machine. A local internet outage won't affect execution. You'll want to check in and verify fills once you reconnect, but the copier doesn't pause because your connection dropped.

Can SyncFutures copy between different brokers?
Yes. Cross-broker copying is one of the core features — you can copy from a Tradovate master to a Rithmic slave, for example. Most desktop copiers are designed for a single broker environment.

Do I need to keep my trading platform running?
For SyncFutures: no. The copy rules execute through the broker's API on our infrastructure. You don't need NinjaTrader, Tradovate, or any platform open on your local machine for the copier to run.

Is there a latency difference vs. a local copier?
For swing and intraday trend trades, no meaningful difference. For scalping strategies that depend on filling at exact ticks: a local plugin running close to the exchange can have lower raw latency. If your strategy is genuinely tick-sensitive, that's worth testing for yourself.

How many connections and accounts can I run?
Plans are limited by broker connections, not by account count: 3 connections on Starter, 5 on Professional, unlimited on Ultimate. Since one connection can hold every account under a single broker login, Starter and Professional both allow an unlimited number of accounts within their connection limit; Ultimate additionally supports up to 200 accounts total. See pricing.
